Many of us are familiar with the impact our diet can have on our oral health. But did you know that there are vitamins and foods that are specifically beneficial for your teeth when you have braces?

Healthy teeth always respond better to orthodontic treatments, which is why we wanted to recommend the following foods for braces:

1. Smoothies

Smoothies are a great option because of how customizable they can be! Found in many citrus fruits, such as oranges, Vitamin C is essential when it comes to maintaining healthy gums and teeth. The powerful vitamin can also help heal any mouth wounds or irritation that may have come with your treatment.

The cool temperature and smooth texture of a smoothie can easily help soothe any soreness you may be experiencing by helping to decrease swelling in your gums and teeth.

2. Yogurt

Whether you like it plain or topped with soft fruit and honey, yogurt can be a soothing treat when you have braces! High in calcium and bacteria, yogurt also offers your smile an extra dose of beneficial bacteria. These probiotics can help combat any bad bacteria that may be lingering in your gums.

3. Sweet Potatoes

Full of both Vitamin C and Vitamin A, sweet potatoes help to maintain the soft tissue of your gums. Sweet potatoes also contain keratin, which works to help the formation of your tooth enamel.

Whether they’re baked, boiled, or mashed, sweet potatoes can stand as a filling part of your diet if your teeth and jaws are sore following an adjustment.

4. Soup

Soup contains helpful proteins and vitamins that can work to help your mouth heal faster. Enjoying a bowl of soup can also give your teeth and jaws a break from chewing if your gums are feeling tender.

5. Fish

Chewing proteins such as beef, pork, or chicken can be especially difficult when you have braces. Fish, however, is soft, flaky, and a wonderful alternative if you don’t want to compromise on the protein in your diet. Fatty fish such as salmon and tuna are a great source of Vitamin D, which helps your body better absorb and use calcium, another crucial vitamin that helps protect your teeth and gum from disease.

Braces can lead to some adjustments in your diet but focusing on incorporating healthy foods that work to keep your mouth feeling strong can be the best way to ensure a successful treatment!
