Orthodontic Emergencies

Orthodontic emergencies can happen unexpectedly, and they can be quite uncomfortable and painful. It is important to know how to deal with orthodontic emergencies to avoid further damage or complications. To make things more manageable, here are five helpful tips from Sullivan Orthodontics on how to deal with orthodontic emergencies.

1. Call Your Orthodontist Immediately

If you experience an orthodontic emergency, the first thing you should do is call your orthodontist immediately. Explain your situation and ask for advice on what to do next. Your orthodontist will provide instructions on how to manage the emergency before you can get to their office. They may also schedule an appointment for you to come in and fix the issue.

2. Use Orthodontic Wax

If a bracket or wire has become loose and is causing irritation or discomfort, you can use orthodontic wax to cover the affected area. This will help reduce the discomfort caused by the loose bracket or wire. To use the wax, clean the affected area and dry it thoroughly. Then, take a small piece of wax and roll it into a ball. Place the wax over the bracket or wire that is causing discomfort, and press it down gently.

3. Rinse with Salt Water

If you experience mouth sores or ulcers as a result of your orthodontic treatment, a saltwater rinse can help reduce the pain and inflammation. To make a saltwater rinse, mix a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water. Swish the solution around your mouth for about 30 seconds and spit it out. Repeat this process several times a day until the sores or ulcers have healed.

4. Avoid Hard and Sticky Foods

Orthodontic appliances can be damaged by hard and sticky foods. If you have braces, it is important to avoid these types of foods to prevent damaging your braces or wires. Hard foods can break your brackets or wires, while sticky foods can get stuck in your braces and cause discomfort. Stick to soft foods, such as pasta, soups, and mashed potatoes, and avoid hard and sticky foods like popcorn, nuts, gum, and hard candy.

5. Use Over-The-Counter Pain Relievers

If you experience pain or discomfort as a result of your orthodontic treatment, you can use over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, to help manage the pain. Follow the instructions on the label carefully and do not exceed the recommended dosage. If the pain persists or becomes severe, contact your orthodontist immediately.
